West Coast Travel Hack 2011

I oktober arrangeras Sveriges första TravelHack. Trafiklab.se är en del av evenemanget, som är en plattform för datakällor och ett forum för att presentera tävlingsbidrag.

For the first time ever this fall “TravelHack” is launched as a service innovation competition with a special focus to improve how people travel in a sustainable manner. The competition will take place October 8–9 at Department of Applied Information Technology, Göteborgs universitet, Lindholmen Science Park in Göteborg. The TravelHack invites teams of excellent developers, designers and creators to take on the challenge to design and implement operational prototypes that envisions the future of digital services for sustainable mobility.

Within the project ISET (Innovation for Sustainable Everyday Travel) the aim is to stimulate innovation of new digital services that enhance the ability for people in Western Sweden and beyond to travel more sustainable. We believe that sustainable travelling requires new and outstanding digital services which goes beyond the functionality of the travel planner and in larger extent than now are personalized for the user. Therefore the ISET project will reward those participants that within the competition develop the most innovative, best implemented, and impactful service prototypes, which facilitate people, to shift from energy consuming travels to other more sustainable ways of travelling.

The teams compete for awards exceeding the total amount of SEK 100.000 (€10.000) together with wide exposure of their work. The operational prototype may be any kind of software application, be it for a mobile handheld device, for the web, a personal computer, SMS, or any software platform broadly available to the public, or combinations of these devices/platforms.

The vision with TravelHack 2011 is that it becomes a fun, lively, productive and creative live jam that results in operational service prototypes with excellent quality, creative new thinking and the power to have an impact in the society. The vision with the event is furthermore to stimulate that it becomes a yearly event that in corporation with other competitions, which are based on open data and open innovation, pinpoint service innovation within the fields of sustainable mobility, public transport and intelligent transport systems (ITS).

TravelHack 2011 will have a focus on Western Sweden in order to get the ball rolling however the aim is to broaden the challenge in the years to come and widen the scope of the competition to the whole of Sweden and moreover beyond our national border and making in an international event. Sustainable innovation is not a endavour for a metropolitan, a region or a country. It is an international challenge which requires collaboration over boarders and cultures. Nevertheless in order for sustainable innovation to be impactful on a large scale the movement must start with the success of a seed – WestCoast TravelHack 2011!
